ARTWORK

Jessica’s comics and graphic novels have all met with critical acclaim. She specialises in bringing the glamour of old Hollywood to life on paper in her distinctive black and white style.

She emerged on the comics scene in 2013 with a one page strip for the 2013 Thought Bubble anthology, written by her and illustrated by her mentor, DC artist Mark Buckingham (published by Image Comics).

She followed this with her first self-published comic “It Girl”, about the life of silent movie star Clara Bow. The comic was selected as one of the Ten Must Own Comics of 2013 by Broken Frontier, the major website for indie creators. Since then she has continued to receive recognition for work both independently and in collaborative projects.

“Vivacity” ( about film star Vivien Leigh) was selected as one of the Ten Must Own Comics 2014. Her first graphic novel “Elsie Harris Picture Palace” was shortlisted for the Myriad Editions First Graphic Novel Prize in 2014 and subsequently published by Miwk in 2015. She was nominated in the Breakout Talent category for the Broken Frontier Awards 2015. She also worked for Vertigo on a Mark Buckingham story for SFX.

In 2017 she self published a book of her iconic portraits in “A Star Is Drawn”. In 2018 she illustrated the Richard Dinnick story “Hill of Beans” for a Doctor Who story featuring Mags, the character she played in the classic Doctor Who series.

Last year she successfully crowdfunded her graphic memoir “Life Drawing. A Life Under Lights” which was published by Unbound Books.

Life Drawing: A Life Under Lights

The story of Jessica Martin's ‘life under lights’: from teenage jazz singer, to television impressionist (in the days when light entertainment was at its Saturday night best!), to cult Doctor Who guest star, leading West End musical theatre actress and now, in the last four years, a comic creator and published graphic novelist. It chronicles the people, places and experiences that have shaped her life and career, all rendered in Jessica's ‘comic book’ storytelling style.

Elsie Harris Picture Palace

'Elsie Harris Picture Palace' is Jessica Martin's debut graphic novel.
It was shortlisted for the Myriad First Graphic Novel Prize, 2015.

This hardback volume of over 150 pages continues in Jessica's distinct black and white film style with the tale of young Londoner Elsie who embarks on a journey taking her from Elstree to Hollywood in the 1930s.

Inspired by the unsung genius of the art creatives of the film industry, this is a unique spin on the rags to riches story in the glamorous world of film.

Romance, adventure and mystery await you at the Picture Palace!
